Caregiver Jobs in Poland for Foreign Workers (2026)

PolandPoland

Poland is usually thought of as a country that sends caregivers west, not one that receives them. That is changing fast: Poland's own population is ageing steeply, hundreds of thousands of Polish carers work in Germany, and the domestic gap is increasingly filled by workers from Ukraine, Belarus, the Philippines and beyond. Wages are modest, but Poland offers some of the quickest legal work routes in the EU.

The demand picture

Formal elderly care runs through public nursing homes (DPS - domy pomocy spolecznej), a growing private care-home sector, and care-and-treatment facilities (ZOL). The core role is opiekun/opiekunka osob starszych (elderly carer); medical caregiver (opiekun medyczny) is a recognised qualification obtainable through roughly year-long courses and is increasingly requested by facilities. Informal live-in and daily home care for families is a large parallel market, historically staffed by Ukrainian women. Demand concentrates around big cities - Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, the Tricity - and private homes expanding to serve Poland's growing middle class.

Permit routes: Poland's speed advantage

Poland's system is unusually employer-friendly:

  • Declaration of entrusting work (oswiadczenie): citizens of several countries, including Ukraine, can start work on a simple employer declaration registered with the labour office - one of the fastest legal routes in the EU, valid for limited periods.
  • Standard work permit (type A): for other nationalities, the employer applies to the voivodeship office; care roles regularly pass because local candidates are scarce.
  • Ukrainian citizens have had special legal-stay and work arrangements since 2022; many care employers hire under these rules.

Processing culture is faster than in Western Europe, but paperwork quality matters - use employers who handle it properly. General background: how EU employer sponsorship works.

Language

Polish is required in practice for almost all care work - with residents, families and documentation. Speakers of Ukrainian, Belarusian or Russian typically reach working Polish quickly thanks to Slavic similarity, one reason the pipeline from the east works so well. For others, expect to invest in Polish seriously; English-only care roles are rare outside a handful of premium private homes.

Pay in 2026

As rough orientation: care assistants typically earn around PLN 4,700 to 6,000 gross per month (near or somewhat above the minimum wage, which has risen sharply in recent years), with opiekun medyczny and night-shift work paying more; informal family arrangements vary widely and offer no protections, so prefer contracts. Polish living costs remain clearly below Western Europe, and outside Warsaw a care wage covers a modest life - many workers also value Poland as a place to gain EU experience and a foothold toward long-term EU residence rights.

Cautions

Insist on a written contract (umowa o prace gives the most protection), confirm your permit or declaration actually exists before travelling, and never pay a recruiter for the job itself - legitimate Polish employers do not charge workers for offers.

The opiekun medyczny upgrade

The clearest career move inside Poland is the opiekun medyczny (medical caregiver) qualification: a state-recognised programme, typically around a year at a policealna school, open to adults and sometimes free in public schools. It authorises defined care activities in medical settings, is explicitly demanded by ZOL facilities and hospitals, and lifts pay above basic assistant level. Foreigners can enrol; you will need functional Polish first, which is another argument for starting language early. For Ukrainian-educated nurses, separate simplified pathways into Polish healthcare have operated since 2022 - worth checking if that is your background.

Practicalities of living on a Polish care wage

A care salary supports a modest life outside the biggest cities: a room might cost PLN 900 to 1,500 a month, a small flat in a mid-sized city PLN 2,000 to 3,000, with Warsaw and Krakow well above that. Employers rarely provide housing, unlike in some Western markets, so factor it into negotiations. On contracts: umowa o prace (employment contract) carries full social insurance and counts cleanly toward residence permits; umowa zlecenie (civil contract) is common in care but weaker - if offered one, understand what insurance is actually paid. Poland's residence-card queues at voivodeship offices are notoriously slow; file renewals early and keep every stamped confirmation.
