Plumber Jobs in the Netherlands for Foreign Workers (2026)

the Netherlandsthe Netherlands

In the Netherlands the job title to search for is loodgieter (plumber) or, more often in vacancies, installatiemonteur - an installation fitter who covers water, drainage, central heating and ventilation. Dutch installation firms rarely separate plumbing from heating: the same monteur who fits your bathroom is expected to service a CV-ketel (central heating boiler) or install a hybrid heat pump.

Where the work is

The Netherlands has a structural housing shortage and a government-driven plan to phase out natural gas in homes. That means steady work in new-build housing, bathroom renovation, and above all in retrofitting heat pumps and underfloor heating. Installation companies (installatiebedrijven), maintenance contractors and technical staffing agencies (uitzendbureaus specialized in techniek) are the main employers, concentrated around the Randstad - Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague - where living costs are also the highest in the country.

Permits and sponsorship

EU and EEA citizens can start work immediately. For non-EU workers the realistic route is the single permit (GVVA), which combines residence and work in one application through the IND. The employer applies, and for most trade jobs they must show they could not fill the role locally, so in practice you need a company that is genuinely short-staffed and willing to sponsor. Our article on how EU employer sponsorship works explains what that process looks like from the worker's side.

Qualifications and recognition

Plumbing itself is not a protected title in the Netherlands, but employers care about verifiable skills. Dutch installers usually hold MBO-level diplomas, and gas work requires working under a company certified under the CO-vrij / gasketel certification scheme, so foreign workers doing boiler work must be trained and assessed by their employer. Having your diploma evaluated through IDW (international credential evaluation) makes your CV much easier for Dutch HR departments to read.

Pay expectations

Pay in the installation sector is set largely by the CAO Metaal en Techniek collective agreement. As a rough guide, qualified installatiemonteurs typically earn around €2,600-3,500 gross per month, with all-round service technicians and heat-pump specialists sometimes higher, plus holiday allowance (8%) on top, which is standard in the Netherlands. Agency work can pay similar hourly rates but with less security.

Good to know

  • Dutch employers value punctuality and independent working - monteurs often drive alone to customers.
  • A driving licence is close to essential; a company van is common.
  • Basic Dutch helps enormously with customers, though some firms work in English on large projects.
  • Never pay a recruiter for a job offer. Legitimate Dutch employers and agencies do not charge workers.

Contracts, agencies and the Dutch way of hiring

Many foreign workers enter Dutch installation work through technical staffing agencies, which is legal and common - but check that the agency is SNA-certified (the Dutch labour-standards register) and pays according to the CAO from day one. Agency phases matter: the longer you work, the stronger your contract rights become, and good workers are frequently taken over directly by the client company after some months. Direct contracts usually start with a seven- or twelve-month fixed term, then convert to permanent.

Costs, housing and the practical side

The Randstad rental market is brutally tight; many employers of migrant workers arrange certified housing, and Dutch rules cap what they may deduct from wages for it. Always ask for the housing costs in writing before you travel. Health insurance is mandatory and individual in the Netherlands - roughly €130-160 per month - but employers often point you to group discounts, and lower incomes get a government allowance (zorgtoeslag) that offsets much of it.

Skills that raise your rate

  • Hybrid and full heat-pump installation and commissioning - the single most requested skill in Dutch vacancies.
  • Ventilation balancing (WTW units are standard in new Dutch homes).
  • Experience reading Dutch or international technical drawings.
  • VCA safety certificate - a one-day exam, available in several languages, that many sites simply require. Getting VCA before you arrive makes you immediately deployable and noticeably more attractive to agencies and employers alike.
