Working in Slovakia as a Non-EU Foreigner: Permits, Jobs and Pay (2026)

Slovakia builds more cars per capita than any other country in the world - Volkswagen in Bratislava, Kia near Žilina, Stellantis in Trnava, Jaguar Land Rover in Nitra, and now Volvo building a plant in the east. That industrial machine, plus logistics and a growing Bratislava services scene, is why Slovak employers increasingly hire non-EU workers.

The route: temporary residence for the purpose of employment

The core status is temporary residence for the purpose of employment (prechodný pobyt na účel zamestnania), usually processed as a single permit combining residence and work rights. How it flows:

  • The employer reports the vacancy to the Office of Labour (úrad práce) in advance - typically at least 20 working days - so the labour market test can run; jobs on Slovakia's shortage occupation list in districts with low unemployment skip the test and get streamlined treatment.
  • You submit the residence application at a Slovak embassy (or in-country in limited cases); the Foreign Police (cudzinecká polícia) decide.
  • Permits are tied to the employer and role; the standard decision window is up to 90 days, longer in practice when offices are busy.

Highly qualified workers can use the EU Blue Card. Slovakia has also periodically streamlined rules for specific origin countries and for temporary agency employment in industry - but be careful with agency work: check who your legal employer is and what happens to your permit if the assignment ends.

Sectors hiring non-EU workers

  • Automotive and suppliers - assembly operators, welders, quality control, forklift drivers and maintenance across the four (soon five) car plants and hundreds of component factories.
  • Electronics and machinery - plants around Nitra, Trenčín and Košice.
  • Logistics and warehousing - hubs around Bratislava, Senec and Žilina.
  • Construction - trades and labourers.
  • IT and shared services - Bratislava and Košice host international business-services centres recruiting in English.

Pay and cost of living

Hedged 2026 guidance: production-line and warehouse roles typically pay around €1,100-1,500 gross per month including shift bonuses, skilled trades and experienced operators €1,400-1,900, and IT or shared-services specialists roughly €1,800-3,500+. The statutory minimum wage is updated annually - check the current amount. Manufacturing employers commonly add attendance and shift premiums that meaningfully lift base pay; ask for the full breakdown.

Costs: Bratislava is the expensive outlier, with rents approaching Vienna's shadow; many factory workers live in cheaper towns or employer-arranged dormitories (confirm the deduction). Žilina, Nitra, Trnava and Košice offer much lower rents, making a factory wage stretch further than the headline number suggests.

A word of caution

Industrial recruitment through intermediaries is common in Slovakia, and so are stories of inflated promises. No legitimate recruiter charges workers for a job offer, and permits come only from the Foreign Police, never from an agent. For the broader context, see EU work permits and visas explained.

Dormitories, agencies and keeping your status safe

Most non-EU production workers in Slovakia live, at least initially, in employer- or agency-arranged dormitories near the plants. Before signing, get three things in writing: the monthly housing deduction, the notice period if you leave the job, and whether the room is tied to the specific assignment - because with temporary agency employment, the end of an assignment can cascade into losing housing and, if a new placement is not found quickly, your residence grounds. Directly employed workers have the more stable position; if you start via an agency, aim to convert to direct employment once you have proven yourself, which plants routinely offer to good operators.

Your document file needs the standard set - passport, apostilled criminal record certificate with certified Slovak translation, contract, accommodation proof and qualification evidence - and the Foreign Police appointment after arrival is mandatory and time-boxed, so do not miss it. Shop-floor Slovak overlaps heavily with Czech and is learnable; many lines run with translated work instructions and bilingual team leads, but shift-leader promotions almost always require conversational Slovak. After five years of continuous residence, long-term residence detaches you from any single employer - the milestone worth planning toward.

This is general information, not legal advice. Verify current procedures with the Slovak Ministry of Interior and Foreign Police (minv.sk) before making decisions.
