Working in France from Zimbabwe: Visa, Permit, Costs (2026)

ZimbabweFranceFrance

Is France right for you and how does the permit work?

If you are a Zimbabwean worker skilled in trades like welding, driving, construction, farm work, or hospitality, moving to France is possible, but you must understand the rules before spending money. The biggest hurdle for most workers from Zimbabwe is language. French employers require basic to conversational French for daily site safety and communication. If you only speak English, Shona, or Ndebele, securing legal work in France can be very difficult. In that case, European countries such as Poland, Croatia, or the United Kingdom often provide more direct work visa options for Zimbabwean tradespeople.

If you do speak French or are willing to learn, France offers structured legal routes for non-European workers. You cannot apply for a work visa independently. The process always begins in France with your employer. The employer must apply online through the official French Ministry of Interior portal for a work authorization document known as an autorisation de travail.

Once the French authorities approve this document, your employer sends it to you in Zimbabwe. Only after receiving this official approval can you apply for your entry visa. Depending on the contract length, you will receive a national long-stay visa serving as a residence permit, officially named Visa de long séjour valant titre de séjour (VLS-TS), or a seasonal worker visa (travailleur saisonnier) for temporary agricultural contracts.

France maintains a list of shortage occupations (métiers en tension). When a job falls under this list, the French employer does not have to prove they tried to hire a French or European Union citizen first. However, the employer must still submit the initial application for your permit.

Here are three trades where French employers recruit international workers:

  • Construction trades: Building firms hire certified bricklayers, plumbers, and electricians to support major residential and infrastructure projects across the country.
  • Seasonal agricultural labor: Commercial farms and vineyards recruit seasonal fruit pickers and farm hands during harvest periods under temporary seasonal permits.
  • Hospitality and kitchen staff: Hotels and restaurants in major tourist regions hire kitchen helpers and line cooks who possess basic French speaking abilities.

Applying in Zimbabwe and document legalisation

Once your employer in France receives your approved autorisation de travail, you must start your visa application online through the official France-Visas website. After filling out the electronic application forms, you must book an appointment to submit your physical documents and give biometrics (fingerprints and photo).

You will submit your application at the VFS Global Visa Application Centre serving France, located in Harare, Zimbabwe. Never attempt to travel to France on a visitor visa with the plan of looking for a job. French law strictly forbids converting a tourist visa into a work permit from inside the country.

When you attend your appointment in Harare, you will need to provide a complete document file:

  • Valid passport: Your Zimbabwean passport must have at least two blank pages and remain valid for at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave France.
  • Approved work permit: The official digital copy of your approved autorisation de travail issued by the French authorities to your employer.
  • Police clearance certificate: An official Criminal Record Certificate issued by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Harare.
  • Trade qualifications: Certified copies of your apprenticeship certificates, National Diplomas, or formal employment reference letters proving your trade experience.
  • Sworn translations: Every document issued in English or local Zimbabwean languages must be translated into French by an officially certified sworn translator.
  • Document authentication: Your Zimbabwean police clearance and trade certificates must be legalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in Harare before submission.
  • Medical and health insurance: A basic medical assessment and travel insurance policy covering your initial arrival period in France.

Fees, costs, and scam protection

Securing a visa involves official fees set by France as well as local preparation expenses in Zimbabwe. Always budget carefully before starting the process.

  • Official visa fee: Set by the French government at approximately €99 for a long-stay work visa.
  • VFS service fee: The visa application center in Harare charges an administrative service fee of approximately €25 to €35, payable in local currency or USD.
  • Processing timeline: Employer work permit approval in France usually takes approximately 4 to 12 weeks. Once you submit biometrics at VFS in Harare, visa processing takes approximately 2 to 6 weeks.
  • Local Zimbabwean costs: Expect to spend approximately $10 to $30 USD for a CID police clearance, approximately $10 to $20 USD per document for Ministry legalisation, approximately $25 to $50 USD per page for certified French translations, approximately $30 to $80 USD for medical checks, and approximately $600 to $1100 USD for a one-way flight from Harare to Paris.

Under French and European Union regulations, no recruitment agency or employer is legally permitted to charge a job seeker a fee for job placement. The employer carries all costs related to recruitment and permit applications in France. Be extremely careful of fake recruiters in Harare or Bulawayo demanding large upfront cash payments for guaranteed French visas or fake employment offers. Never pay for a job offer.

Myths vs facts

  • Myth: You can apply for a French work visa on your own without an employer. Fact: You cannot apply independently; a registered French employer must secure an approved work permit for you before you apply for a visa in Harare.
  • Myth: Speaking English is enough to work in manual trades in France. Fact: Employers and site managers require basic spoken French for daily instructions, safety compliance, and contract understanding.
  • Myth: Paying a private agent in Zimbabwe guarantees a French visa approval. Fact: Only French consular officials decide visa outcomes; paying an agent money will never guarantee a permit or speed up processing.
  • Myth: You can bring your family to France immediately on any work contract. Fact: Standard work visa holders must usually live and work in France legally for at least 18 months before applying for family reunification.

Before you sign

  • Verify the permit: Confirm that your employer has sent you an official autorisation de travail generated by the French government portal.
  • Review the contract details: Ensure your contract clearly states your monthly pay, weekly working hours, overtime terms, and accommodation arrangements in France.
  • Translate documents early: Send your CID police clearance and trade certificates to an approved French translator well before your Harare appointment.
  • Clarify travel costs: Ask your employer in writing whether they cover your flight ticket from Harare or if you are expected to pay for your travel upfront.
  • Refuse upfront fees: Stop dealing immediately with anyone who asks for money to secure a job offer or guarantee visa approval.
