Construction Jobs in Denmark for Foreign Workers (2026)

DenmarkDenmark

Denmark pays construction workers well, but it is honest to say upfront: for non-EU workers it is one of the harder Nordic countries to enter directly, because its main permit scheme has a high salary threshold. Understanding which door actually opens for your situation saves months of wasted applications.

Trades in demand

  • Concrete workers, formwork carpenters and rebar fixers on metro, hospital and energy projects
  • Scaffolders with documented erection training
  • Carpenters and bricklayers for renovation and housing
  • Groundworkers on large infrastructure jobs, including energy-island and tunnel-related works

The permit route - realistic options

EU/EEA citizens work freely and only need a residence document and tax registration. For non-EU workers, applications go through SIRI (the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration). The Pay Limit Scheme requires a salary high enough that ordinary construction jobs rarely qualify. More realistic paths are the Positive List for skilled work, when specific construction occupations appear on it, or arriving as a posted worker employed by a company in another EU country. Because the lists change, always verify the current version before applying. The general mechanics are covered in our EU work permits guide.

Pay: collective agreements rule

Denmark has no statutory minimum wage; pay comes from collective agreements, mainly with the 3F union. As a rough 2026 guide, construction workers under agreement typically earn around DKK 145 to 200 per hour (roughly 19 to 27 euros), with skilled concrete and formwork specialists toward the top and piece-work sometimes above. Danish taxes are high, and so are living costs, especially in Copenhagen - but the agreements also bring pension contributions and holiday pay worth checking line by line on your payslip.

Safety and registration requirements

Denmark does not use a single national site card like Sweden's ID06 or Norway's HSE card. Instead, employers must provide documented safety training, and specific certificates are legally required for tasks such as scaffold erection above certain heights, telehandler and crane operation, and hot work. Foreign service providers must register jobs in the RUT register, and inspectors from the Danish Working Environment Authority visit sites regularly. Bring translated proof of any machinery or scaffold tickets you hold.

Posted worker vs direct employment

Posting is common on Danish mega-projects. Posted workers must be RUT-registered and receive Danish-level core terms where agreements have been extended to the site - unions actively police this and will pursue underpayment. Direct employment with a Danish firm generally brings better pension and sick-pay terms and a clearer footing. If an intermediary asks you to pay for the job itself, walk away; legitimate Danish recruitment never charges workers for an offer.

Where the work is and how hiring runs

Copenhagen dominates, with metro extensions, harbour districts and hospital projects, but Aarhus, Odense and the Fehmarnbelt tunnel corridor in the south have absorbed thousands of workers, many recruited through international subcontractors. Danish hiring is fast and informal by European standards - trials of a few days are common, and crews are often assembled through recommendations. That makes a visible, verifiable profile with certificates and references disproportionately valuable here. Expect interviews in English; Danish is rarely required on international projects, though it helps on smaller domestic firms' sites.

Practical steps after arrival

You will need a CPR number (civil registration) and a tax card from the Danish Tax Agency before wages can be paid correctly, plus MitID for digital identification - nearly everything official in Denmark runs through it. Holiday money accrues through the Feriekonto system; check it appears on your payslip. Many foreign workers join 3F, whose construction branch has a long record of recovering unpaid wages for migrants regardless of nationality - membership costs money but functions as practical insurance. Housing in Copenhagen is tight and deposits are large, often three months' rent, so arrive with reserves or negotiate employer-arranged accommodation for the first period. Finally, verify your employer actually registered you for Danish social contributions; a payslip that shows no ATP pension line is a warning sign worth acting on early.
