Electrician Jobs in Spain for Foreign Workers (2026)

Spain will not pay you Nordic wages - but it is one of Europe's biggest renewable-energy construction sites, and its labour-migration rules have become more pragmatic in recent years. For electricians from Latin America especially, the shared language makes Spain the natural European entry point.
The Spanish qualification system: carne de instalador
Spain regulates who may sign off low-voltage electrical installations:
- An instalador autorizado en baja tension holds an individual qualification certificate obtained via recognised training or certified competence, and works within an empresa instaladora habilitada - an installation company registered with the regional industry authority.
- Installations are certified with an official bulletin (boletin / certificado de instalacion electrica) signed through the registered company.
- As an employed electrician you can do much of the physical work without personally holding the certificate, but holding it - or working toward it - raises your value sharply. Requirements are managed at regional (autonomous community) level, so check the rules where you will live.
Foreign qualifications and diplomas can go through homologacion or professional recognition; for trade work, many employers care more about demonstrable experience plus obtaining the Spanish certificate than about formal diploma equivalence.
Permit routes for non-EU electricians
Spain maintains a shortage-occupation catalogue (catalogo de ocupaciones de dificil cobertura) by province; when an occupation is listed, employers can hire from abroad without a full labour-market test. Spain has also expanded legal pathways and regularisation for workers already in the country, and has bilateral recruitment arrangements with several Latin American countries. The general logic of EU permits is covered in our EU work permits guide; Spanish specifics live with the immigration authorities (extranjeria).
Where the demand is
Solar - the big one
Spain leads Europe in utility-scale solar construction, with huge plants across Extremadura, Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha and Aragon. These projects hire assemblers, electricians and commissioning technicians in waves - project-based, travel-heavy work, often through large contractors.
Residential, tourism and construction
Coastal regions and the islands need electricians for hotels, renovation and housing; Madrid and Barcelona for commercial fit-out. Air-conditioning-plus-electrical combinations are valued.
Industry and wind
Industrial maintenance roles cluster in the Basque Country, Navarra and Catalonia; wind-farm service work is spread across the interior.
Pay: keep expectations realistic
A qualified electrician in Spain typically earns around 1,500 to 2,200 euros gross per month, with utility-scale solar and industrial roles sometimes higher, especially with travel allowances. That is far below northern Europe - but so are living costs outside Madrid and Barcelona. Provincial collective agreements for the metal sector set minimum scales for electricians.
Practical notes
- Spanish is essentially required; English alone works only in narrow expat niches.
- Insist on a written contract and social-security registration (alta en la Seguridad Social) from day one - informal work leaves you unprotected.
- Nobody legitimate charges workers for a Spanish job offer.
A practical route in
For most non-EU electricians the workable sequence in Spain looks like this:
- Check the shortage catalogue for your target province - listings differ regionally, and a listed occupation dramatically simplifies the employer's paperwork;
- Target companies, not job boards alone: utility-scale solar contractors and large installation groups hire in batches when projects close financing, and they are used to cross-border recruitment;
- Prepare Spanish-format documents: a one-page CV in Spanish, translated certificates, and reference letters - hiring managers rarely process foreign-language files;
- Plan the certificate path: ask regional training centres about routes to the low-voltage installer qualification; some employers sponsor employees through it because it lets them sign off more work.
Contracts, hours and living well on Spanish pay
Insist on a written contract stating the applicable collective agreement (usually the provincial metal-sector convenio), your professional category and your hours - these determine your enforceable minimum pay and supplements. Utility-scale projects often run long days with travel between remote sites; per-diems (dietas) for food and lodging should be specified in writing. The economics work best outside the two big metros: in Extremadura, Murcia or inland Andalusia, modest wages stretch to a decent life, and solar work is on your doorstep. August shutdowns, late dinners and a slower administrative pace are all real - build patience into your plans, especially for any appointment with the immigration office.
This is general information, not legal advice. Check the official immigration portal (inclusion.gob.es / extranjeria) and eures.europa.eu before deciding.
