Plumber Jobs in Germany for Foreign Workers (2026)

GermanyGermany

Germany does not really have a job called just 'plumber'. The trade you will see in job ads is Anlagenmechaniker für Sanitär-, Heizungs- und Klimatechnik (SHK) - a combined sanitary, heating and air-conditioning technician. That matters for foreign workers, because German employers expect one person to handle bathroom installations, gas boilers and increasingly heat pumps. If you only ever did water and drainage work, expect to learn the heating side on the job.

Why demand is high

Germany's push to replace gas and oil boilers with heat pumps has created a long backlog of installation work, and the SHK trade regularly appears in official shortage occupation analyses. Small and mid-sized Handwerk companies do most of the hiring, alongside facility-management firms and larger mechanical contractors working on housing and commercial projects.

Recognition of your qualification

For non-EU citizens, recognition is usually the key step. The SHK trade is part of the regulated crafts system, and the local Handwerkskammer (chamber of crafts) assesses whether your foreign training is equivalent to the German qualification. If it is only partly equivalent, you can often close the gap through a qualification analysis or adaptation training rather than starting over. The official portal anerkennung-in-deutschland.de explains the process in several languages. EU citizens can work without a permit, but recognition still helps with pay grading and with tasks like gas work that require documented competence.

Permit routes

Most non-EU tradespeople come through Germany's Skilled Immigration Act routes: a work visa based on a recognized (or partially recognized) vocational qualification and a concrete job offer. The Chancenkarte (opportunity card) is a points-based option that lets you enter to look for work. For how EU permits work in general, see our guide to EU work permits and visas explained.

What plumbers earn

Pay varies a lot by region and by whether the company follows the SHK collective agreements. Very roughly, qualified installers typically earn around €2,800-3,800 gross per month, with experienced technicians who hold heat-pump or gas certifications sometimes above that, and helpers below it. Southern states like Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg tend to pay more, but rents there are also noticeably higher; eastern regions pay less but living costs are lower.

Practical tips

  • German language matters on site - many employers want at least A2-B1 for safety instructions and customer contact.
  • Bring documented proof of every certificate, apprenticeship and employer reference, translated.
  • Heat-pump experience is currently the strongest single selling point on a CV.
  • Nobody legitimate charges workers for a job offer - if a recruiter asks you to pay for a contract, walk away.

A typical week on the job

Most SHK employees split their time between installation projects (new bathrooms, pipe runs in renovated apartments, boiler-room refits) and customer service calls - leaking valves, dead circulation pumps, annual boiler maintenance. Emergency on-call duty (Notdienst) rotates through the team and is paid extra at most firms. Company vans, tool budgets and paid training days are common because employers are competing hard for staff, so ask about them openly in interviews - it is normal, not rude.

How hiring usually happens

German Handwerk firms hire year-round, not seasonally, and many are family businesses that value stability: a candidate who signals they want to stay three or more years is far more attractive than one hunting a single project. Expect a Probearbeiten - a paid or unpaid trial day or two on site - before a contract. Contracts are usually permanent (unbefristet) after a six-month probation, which also matters for renting a flat, since German landlords ask for proof of stable income. Some employers help with the first apartment or temporary housing; in cities with tight housing like Munich or Frankfurt, that support can be worth more than a pay difference of a few hundred euros.

Building toward more

The German system rewards formal steps: after some years, employees can pursue the Meister qualification, which raises pay, allows training apprentices and is the ticket to running your own SHK business one day. Several federal states subsidize Meister courses heavily. It is a realistic long-term path for immigrants - a meaningful share of new Handwerk businesses in Germany are founded by people born abroad.
