Warehouse and Logistics Jobs in the Netherlands for Foreign Workers (2026)

the Netherlandsthe Netherlands

The Netherlands built its economy on moving other people's goods. Rotterdam is Europe's largest seaport, Schiphol a top cargo airport, and the southern corridor from Venlo to Tilburg has been voted Europe's best logistics location so many times it is almost boring. All of it runs on warehouse labour, and a huge share of that labour is foreign - mostly EU workers placed through agencies.

The geography of the work

  • Rotterdam and the Maasvlakte - container logistics, distribution centres, empty-depot and value-added logistics work around the port.
  • Venlo, Tilburg, Eindhoven corridor - the European distribution centres of global brands cluster here, close to the German border; this is the densest concentration of fulfilment jobs.
  • Schiphol/Amsterdam - air cargo handling, flowers, pharma and express freight.
  • Utrecht and the centre - national e-commerce and supermarket distribution.

Certificates: the heftruckcertificaat

Forklift work requires demonstrable competence; in practice Dutch employers ask for a heftruckcertificaat, a short course-plus-exam certificate for counterbalance forklifts, with a separate one for reach trucks (reachtruck). Courses take one or two days and agencies frequently pay for them. EPT (electric pallet truck) experience is the usual first step. A foreign certificate plus real experience often gets you fast-tracked through a Dutch course rather than exempted - budget for that.

Pay and the shift-allowance system

Warehouse base pay in 2026 typically runs around 13 to 15 euros gross per hour for general work and a bit more with a forklift certificate. The Dutch system adds structured shift allowances (toeslagen): evening hours commonly pay extra percentages, nights more again, and Sundays substantially more, following the applicable CAO. Agency workers are legally entitled to the same basic pay as direct staff. Figures are hedged - CAOs update annually, so check the current one for your employer.

Permits: mostly an EU-worker market

EU and EEA citizens work without permits, and the sector's international workforce is overwhelmingly EU - Polish, Romanian, Spanish and Portuguese workers placed by uitzendbureaus, often with housing packages. For non-EU citizens the honest answer is that a work permit (TWV) for general warehouse work is very rarely granted, because the employer must prove no EU candidate exists. Non-EU workers in Dutch warehouses almost always have another basis: student status, a partner's permit, or protection status. Read EU work permits and visas explained before spending money on anyone promising otherwise - and remember nobody legitimate charges workers for a job offer.

Agency housing: the fine print

Many agencies bundle jobs with housing. Reputable ones are SNF/SNA certified and cap deductions transparently; bad ones tie your bed to your contract so tightly that losing shifts means losing your room within days. Ask for the housing cost per week in writing, and whether the housing contract survives the end of the job.

Cost of living

Randstad housing is scarce and expensive; the southern logistics corridor (Venlo, Helmond, Tilburg) is cheaper and closer to the work. Many workers live near the German or Belgian border where rents drop further.

Standing out

  • Reach-truck and high-bay experience is the single best-paid differentiator.
  • English is the working language of most large distribution centres.
  • State your maximum shift flexibility - fully flexible workers get the most hours.

Peak season: the annual hiring wave

Dutch fulfilment runs on a pronounced annual cycle, and knowing it is a hiring strategy in itself. From late September, distribution centres staff up for the Sinterklaas-Black Friday-Christmas sequence, and agencies recruit across Europe in volume - this is when a worker with no Dutch experience gets hired fastest, often within days of applying. January brings the returns wave (e-commerce returns processing is its own sub-industry in Venlo and Tilburg), then volumes settle until the summer holiday cover period, when regular staff take leave and temporary hours open up again. Workers who arrive for peak and perform reliably are the ones offered year-round contracts in January, when managers decide who to keep. Two practical notes: peak means mandatory overtime at many sites, typically well paid but worth confirming in writing, and housing gets scarce exactly when hiring peaks - lock in accommodation before you travel, not after arrival.

This is general information, not legal advice; verify permit rules with the IND (ind.nl) and UWV.
