Electrician Jobs in Belgium for Foreign Workers (2026)

BelgiumBelgium

Belgium hides a strong electrician market behind a complicated structure: three regions (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels) each run their own work-permit policy and their own shortage lists. Electricians have featured on the Flemish shortage list in particular, which materially eases hiring from outside the EU. Add Antwerp's port-industrial cluster and North Sea offshore wind, and Belgium is more interesting than its size suggests.

Permits: the single permit, by region

Non-EU workers use Belgium's single permit (combined work and residence authorisation), applied for by the employer in the region where you will work:

  • Flanders maintains a shortage-occupation list (knelpuntberoepen for migration purposes); when your job is on it, the labour-market test is waived and processing is more predictable. Electricians and related technical roles have appeared on it - verify the current list.
  • Wallonia and Brussels run their own lists and procedures, generally with more labour-market testing.

Because the employer files the application, target companies with sponsorship experience - our piece on how EU employer sponsorship works explains what that looks like in practice.

Qualifications and safety attestations

Belgium does not license individual employed electricians the way Sweden or Norway does, but structure exists:

  • BA4/BA5 attestations: employers designate workers as 'warned' (BA4) or 'qualified' (BA5) persons for electrical risk, based on training and experience. Expect your first Belgian employer to put you through this.
  • Installations are inspected by accredited inspection bodies before energisation, which keeps quality standards high on site.
  • Self-employment as an electrical contractor involves demonstrating professional competence - a later step, not an entry requirement.
  • For renewables, RESCERT certification is the recognised scheme for installers of solar and other small renewable systems.

Where the demand is

Industry and the port cluster

Antwerp's petrochemical and logistics complex, plus manufacturing across Flanders, generates constant demand for industrial electricians, especially for maintenance and turnaround (shutdown) projects.

Offshore wind and energy

Belgium has significant North Sea wind capacity and more planned; service work runs out of coastal bases and requires GWO safety training on top of electrical skills. Grid reinforcement projects add high-voltage adjacent work.

Construction and renovation

Brussels and the main Flemish cities have steady installation and renovation demand, including heat pumps and EV chargers.

Pay expectations

Belgian pay is set largely by sectoral joint committees, and wages are indexed to inflation - unusual in Europe. A qualified electrician typically earns around 2,800 to 3,800 euros gross per month, with industrial maintenance and offshore roles higher, plus meal vouchers and allowances that meaningfully raise the package. Taxes are high; net pay is lower than the gross suggests, but social protection is extensive.

Practical notes

  • Language splits by region: Dutch in Flanders, French in Wallonia and largely in Brussels. Industrial employers are the most flexible with English.
  • No legitimate employer or agency charges workers for a Belgian job offer.

Finding the employers who can actually hire you

In Belgium the constraint is rarely demand - it is finding firms with the administrative muscle to sponsor. Concentrate on:

  • Large electrical contractors and industrial-maintenance groups, which run permanent recruitment and know the single-permit process;
  • Turnaround and shutdown specialists around Antwerp's industrial cluster, which staff up for planned maintenance stops and value certified, mobile electricians;
  • Offshore wind service companies operating from Ostend, which combine electrical trades with GWO-certified profiles;
  • Recognised temporary-work agencies with technical desks - agency work is tightly regulated in Belgium and a common first entry.

Money, taxes and the fine print

Belgian gross-to-net arithmetic surprises newcomers: income tax and social contributions are among Europe's highest, but the package is padded by elements that do not show in the base salary - automatic indexation of wages to inflation, meal vouchers, end-of-year premiums, generous holiday pay and, in industrial roles, shift supplements that add substantially to take-home pay. Always evaluate the full annual package, not the monthly gross. Commuting is normal and often compensated; many electricians live in cheaper towns and work in Antwerp or Brussels. Keep every payslip: Belgian joint-committee pay scales are enforceable, and inspectorates and unions do pursue underpayment of foreign workers when documentation exists.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check the regional migration sites (such as vlaanderen.be for Flanders) and dofi.ibz.be before acting.
