Nursing Jobs in Ireland for Foreign Nurses (2026)

IrelandIreland

Ireland is the most internationalized nursing market in Europe: a large share of its registered nurses trained abroad, particularly in India and the Philippines. That means the pathways are well-trodden, hospitals know how to onboard international nurses, and - unusually for the EU - the working language is English.

Registration: NMBI

The regulator is the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). EU-trained nurses go through the EU directive route. Nurses trained outside the EU submit a qualification assessment, and when NMBI finds differences it issues a decision requiring either an aptitude test (the RCSI-run exam is the common choice) or a period of adaptation - a supervised placement in an Irish hospital, historically around 6-12 weeks, during which you work as a candidate nurse. Most applicants now take the aptitude test because it is faster and does not depend on finding a placement. Processing takes months, so start the NMBI file before anything else.

English requirements

NMBI requires evidence of English competence from most non-EU applicants - typically IELTS Academic around 7.0 overall or OET grade B in the relevant sub-tests (check NMBI's current exact rules, which allow some combining of test sittings). Nurses who trained or worked extensively in English may qualify for exemptions.

Permits: nurses are Critical Skills

Nursing sits on Ireland's Critical Skills Occupations List, which is the good permit to have: no labour-market test, a two-year permit, a fast track to long-term residence, and immediate family reunification rights in most cases. Salary thresholds apply but align with normal nursing pay. Our explainer on EU work permits and visas shows how Ireland's system compares with the rest of Europe.

Pay and the cost-of-living caveat

Public-sector (HSE) pay scales are published: staff nurses typically earn around €36,000-55,000 gross per year across the incremental scale, plus premiums for nights, Sundays and specialist qualifications. Private hospitals and nursing homes broadly track these bands. The warning is Dublin housing - rents are among Europe's highest, and many international nurses choose Cork, Limerick, Galway or regional hospitals where pay is identical but rent is not.

  • Irish law and HSE policy are firmly against charging workers recruitment fees. If an agent asks you to pay for an Irish job offer, refuse and report it.

The typical journey, step by step

The well-worn path looks like this: NMBI application and qualification assessment from your home country; English test if required; NMBI decision letter prescribing the aptitude test; employer offer (many Irish hospitals and agencies recruit internationally and pay for flights, first accommodation and the exam); travel to Ireland on the appropriate permission; aptitude test; registration; then commencement as a staff nurse. Many candidates work briefly as healthcare assistants while awaiting the exam - lawful, paid, and often used by employers as a soft landing into the Irish system.

Where nurses are needed most

Demand spans the system, but the deepest gaps are in older-person services (public and private nursing homes), intellectual disability services, theatre and intensive care. Dublin's big teaching hospitals - St James's, the Mater, Beaumont - recruit constantly, but so do model-3 hospitals in regional towns where your salary buys twice the housing. Private nursing home groups are the largest single recruiters of international nurses and frequently offer accommodation support in the first months.

Building a career and a life

Irish nursing offers structured progression: senior staff nurse, clinical nurse manager grades, specialist and advanced practice roles - each with published pay scales. Postgraduate diplomas are often part-funded by employers. On the life side, Critical Skills status means your spouse can work without a separate permit and permanent residence is reachable after two years of the permit plus continued residence - among the fastest routes to settlement in the EU for nurses. The large Indian and Filipino nursing communities also mean ready-made social networks, places of worship and familiar groceries in every Irish city, which makes the first year far less lonely than it might be elsewhere. Weather aside, most international nurses report settling in quickly.
