Truck Driver Jobs in Ireland for Foreign Drivers (2026)

IrelandIreland

Ireland is the only English-speaking country in this series, which alone makes it a favourite target for many foreign drivers. It also genuinely needs them: an island economy where nearly everything moves by truck between ports (Dublin, Rosslare, Cork) and towns, a haulage sector that lost easy access to UK-based drivers after Brexit, and years of official recognition that HGV drivers are hard to find locally.

The permit route: General Employment Permit

Ireland opened its General Employment Permit (GEP) system to HGV drivers precisely because of the shortage. The essentials:

  • You need a full-time job offer from an Irish employer; the employer or you applies to the Department of Enterprise for the permit.
  • A minimum annual salary applies to GEPs - it has been raised in steps in recent years, so check the current threshold on enterprise.gov.ie; realistic driver offers generally clear it.
  • A labour market needs test (advertising the job locally) applies unless the occupation is on the Critical Skills list, which drivers are not - so expect the employer to run the advertising step.
  • The 50:50 rule requires the workforce to be at least half EEA nationals, which can constrain smaller firms that already employ many non-EEA drivers.

For how permits and employer obligations fit together across Europe, see EU work permits and visas explained.

Licence exchange and CPC via the RSA

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) manages licences and the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), Ireland's Code 95 equivalent.

  • Ireland exchanges licences only with EEA states, the UK and a specific list of recognised countries - and for several of those, truck categories are excluded from exchange even when car licences swap. If your country is not on the list for C/CE, you sit the Irish theory test, then the driver testing process, as a learner in those categories.
  • Driver CPC requires periodic training (one module per year in the Irish system, 35 hours over five years) to keep driving professionally.
  • Note that Ireland drives on the left - a real adjustment if you learned in continental Europe, Latin America or most of Asia.

Pay in euros, island economics

As a rough 2026 guide, HGV drivers in Ireland typically earn around 35,000 to 45,000 euros gross per year, with experienced artic (CE) drivers, ADR tanker work and night trunk runs pushing higher. Many firms pay hourly with substantial overtime. Hedge as always - confirm gross figures in the contract, and remember the permit threshold sets a legal floor.

Domestic vs international routes

Most work is domestic: port drayage from Dublin, retail and food distribution nationwide, construction and agri-feed transport. International work runs to the UK (with customs paperwork) and increasingly on direct ferries to France, avoiding the UK landbridge. Domestic driving is largely home-daily given the island's size.

Cost of living - the honest part

Ireland's weak point is housing: Dublin rents are among Europe's highest, and shortages extend to other cities. Many drivers base themselves in regional towns - often where depots are anyway. Budget seriously for accommodation before you commit, and ask employers what help they offer.

Warning, as everywhere: nobody legitimate charges you for a job offer. Permit fees paid to the state are the employer's or applicant's official costs - agents selling "guaranteed Irish permits" are defrauding you.

Making your application competitive

Because English is the working language, Irish employers screen international CVs directly - so write yours the Irish way: years of HGV experience up front, vehicle types (rigid vs artic), tachograph familiarity, clean-record statement, and referees with phone numbers. Highlight any left-hand-drive-to-right-hand-drive transition experience, or be upfront that you will need adjustment time; honesty lands well. Target employers who have completed GEP hires before - larger hauliers and agencies advertise this openly since the scheme opened to drivers. Ask them who carries the permit fee and what happens during the weeks of processing; reputable firms have clear answers because they have done it repeatedly.

This article is general information, not legal advice. Thresholds and the occupation lists change - check the official sources: enterprise.gov.ie for permits, irishimmigration.ie for visas, rsa.ie for licences.

Irish hauliers hire year-round and value drivers who can start the permit process with documents ready. Create your free profile on Workuro - free, no credit card, employers contact you directly. Create your free profile today.
