Welder Jobs in Denmark for Foreign Workers (2026)

DenmarkDenmark

Denmark is small, but its metal industry punches far above its weight: wind turbine manufacturing, maritime equipment, food-processing machinery and a busy ship repair sector. Danish employers pay well, follow rules carefully, and increasingly recruit welders from outside the EU because the local labour pool is simply too small.

The permit route: the Positive List for Skilled Work

Denmark runs several work schemes, and the one that matters most for welders is the Positive List for Skilled Work - an official list of shortage occupations for which non-EU citizens can get a residence and work permit. Skilled metal trades, including welder-type roles, have appeared on it; the list is updated twice a year, so always check the current version at nyidanmark.dk (SIRI, the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration).

  • You need a written job offer with Danish-standard pay and conditions.
  • The occupation must be on the Positive List at the time of application (or you must qualify under another scheme, such as the Pay Limit Scheme, whose salary threshold is usually too high for welding jobs).
  • SIRI checks that salary and terms are normal by Danish standards - undercutting is a refusal reason.

For background on how European permits compare, see EU work permits and visas explained.

Where the welding jobs are

  • Wind energy: towers, foundations, nacelle components and installation equipment - western and central Jutland is the heart of it, and orders for offshore wind keep fabrication shops busy.
  • Maritime: ship repair and steel outfitting around Odense, Frederikshavn and Esbjerg, plus a large marine-equipment industry.
  • Stainless and food-tech: Denmark's food machinery sector needs clean TIG (141) welders for stainless and hygienic pipework.
  • General steel construction: MAG (135/136) welders across machine shops in Jutland and Funen.

Certificates

The Danish standard is EN ISO 9606-1, and structural work follows EN 1090. For stainless food-grade work, employers value documented TIG experience on thin-wall pipe. Danish shops routinely give a practical weld test on day one. Non-European certificates are treated as background, not proof - budget time and possibly money for requalification at an accredited body, or ask whether the employer arranges it.

Pay and cost of living

Danish wages are high by any standard. As a rough, hedged guide, skilled welders typically earn around 32,000-42,000 DKK gross per month, with overtime and shift supplements on top under collective agreements (Dansk Metal is the key union). The other side of the coin: Denmark is expensive. Rent in Copenhagen is punishing, but most welding jobs are in Jutland towns where a decent flat might cost roughly 5,000-8,000 DKK per month - on a welder's wage that leaves real room to save. High taxes fund healthcare and strong social security that you also benefit from as a permit holder.

Watch-outs

The Positive List updates every January and July - an occupation can drop off, so time your application carefully and never rely on an outdated list. And as everywhere: nobody legitimate charges workers for a job offer or a permit. Danish employers and licensed agencies do not take placement fees from workers.

Danish work culture: what to expect on the shop floor

Denmark's workplaces are famously flat. Foremen expect you to speak up if a drawing looks wrong or a weld sequence will cause distortion - silence is read as disengagement, not respect. Working weeks are short by international standards (37 hours is the norm), overtime is regulated and paid properly, and most colleagues go home at a fixed time; the flip side is that productivity expectations during those hours are high. Nearly everyone speaks functional English, which makes onboarding easier than in much of Europe, though Danish courses are subsidised for foreign workers and worth taking for the long run. Union membership and the linked unemployment funds (a-kasse) are voluntary but widespread, and joining is normal rather than political. If you arrive with family, note that the permit schemes have specific rules on family accompaniment and that childcare is heavily subsidised. Many welders find the combination of high wages, short hours and safety standards the real Danish selling point.
