Welder Jobs in Austria for Foreign Workers (2026)

AustriaAustria

Austria's economy is quietly one of Europe's most industrial. Steel, plant engineering, vehicle components, rail technology and a dense layer of family-owned metal workshops all need welders - and welding trades have repeatedly appeared on Austria's official shortage occupation lists, which opens a specific immigration door for non-EU workers.

The permit route: the Red-White-Red Card

The main instrument is the Red-White-Red Card (Rot-Weiss-Rot-Karte), a points-based combined residence and work permit. For welders, the relevant category is usually skilled workers in shortage occupations:

  • Each year Austria publishes a shortage occupation list (Mangelberufsliste), both nationwide and per federal state. Welding-related trades such as Schweisser have featured on these lists - verify the current year's list before planning anything.
  • You score points for qualifications, work experience, language skills (German or English) and age. You need a minimum score plus a binding job offer paying at least the collectively agreed wage.
  • The employer is involved in the application, and the AMS (public employment service) verifies the conditions.

The EU Blue Card exists in Austria too but targets graduates with high salaries - not the welder's path. For the wider context, see our guide to EU work permits and visas explained.

Where welders are needed

  • Steel and plant engineering: the Linz area and Upper Austria generally form the industrial heartland - structural steel, pressure equipment and heavy fabrication.
  • Vehicle and rail: component plants in Styria and Upper Austria need MAG welders and increasingly robot-weld operators.
  • Alpine infrastructure: cable cars, snow-making systems and specialised steel construction in Tyrol and Salzburg.
  • Pipework and installation: TIG welders for heating, process and energy pipework, often with travel across sites.

Certificates and language

Austrian employers require valid EN ISO 9606-1 certificates, and pressure-equipment work adds stricter, project-specific tests. Certificates from non-European bodies generally mean retesting at an Austrian institute. German matters more here than in the Nordics: many workshops are small and German-speaking, and language points also boost your Red-White-Red score - even A2-level German helps both the application and daily work.

Pay and cost of living

Austrian metal-industry collective agreements are strong and set binding minimum wages by experience level. As a hedged guide for 2026, welders typically earn around 2,600-3,500 euros gross per month, paid 14 times per year - Austria's 13th and 14th salary (holiday and Christmas pay) are a real boost worth understanding when comparing offers. Vienna and the western tourist regions are pricey, but industrial towns in Upper Austria and Styria offer moderate rents, often roughly 600-900 euros for a small flat. Public healthcare and transport are excellent.

Watch-outs

The shortage list changes annually and differs by province - a trade can be listed in Upper Austria but not in Vienna. Confirm the current list before applying, and check both the national and the provincial versions, since they are published separately. And never pay anyone for a job offer: legitimate Austrian employers and the AMS system do not charge workers placement fees under any circumstances.

Counting your points before you apply

Because the Red-White-Red Card is points-based, it pays to do the arithmetic early. Points come from completed vocational training in the shortage occupation, years of relevant experience, language certificates (German or English at recognised levels) and age, with younger applicants scoring higher. Gather evidence in advance: a vocational diploma with certified German translation, employer references confirming years of welding work, and a language certificate even at A1-A2 level can be the difference between clearing the threshold or not. The official migration portal has a points calculator - run your numbers before paying for anything or promising an employer a start date. Also note that the shortage-occupation card ties you initially to the sponsoring employer, with mobility opening up later, so choose that first employer carefully: ask about the exact workshop location, shift model, collective-agreement classification and whether the 13th and 14th salaries are included, as they legally should be.
